Dumke Family History in brief
The Dumkes are an old family who descend from Hugenots, a group of French Protestants followers of John Calvin. From the end of the 17th into the 18th centuries about half a million Hugenots had to leave France because of religious persecution. Many of them settled in England, The Netherlands, Denmark, Eastern Germany, Switzerland and North America. The ancestors of the current Baron of North Cadbury fled to Eastern Germany during the 17th century, from where they had to escape again during World War II. They finally settled in Hamburg.
The family name Dumke derives from, and is an abbreviation of, the given name “Thomas”. The name Thomas and its variants appear also as surnames in Britain, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark and even in the South of India. In Great Britain the family name Thomas is more common in Wales and Cornwall.
